The History of ADHD

Defining ADHD has long been challenging to physicians. Previously characterized for decades as a disorder of inattention with episodes of hyperactivity and impulsivity caused by poor parenting, ADHD is currently believed to be a central nervous system (CNS) disorder. ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the term used in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) diagnostic criteria. ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) with or without hyperactivity is the older term from the DSM-IIIR.
